Date: 2010-07-13 01:22 am (UTC)If you don't mind my asking, I wonder if you could settle something for me and some of my mates. We were talking about your post, you see, and Goshal says that he reckons you can't have done all that practice in a single day, or you'd not have got anything else done. But Moon said that he thought it must be all in a day, because Aurors wouldn't spend so much time in training that they'd not have the chance to go after criminals like
ProfessorMacnair and that Snape fellow. But a couple of the other blokes (er, I don't really want to say who), said that was the proof that you train all the time - because you've not caught them yet. And Moon said he figured it only takes about half a second for a really good duellist to try to block a spell, so even a hundred of them wouldn't take so very long. So, we wondered, do you see. Only my mum says you might think it rude to ask about something like that, and we ought to wait until we tour the Ministry with the YPL next week. So if this is rude and you don't want to answer, that's okay, I don't want to take you away from anything important. Only as you put all these standings in your journal I thought maybe you wouldn't mind setting things straight.

Date: 2010-07-13 03:08 am (UTC)The results I listed are yesterday's, a day when the seven of us were not on duty. Although training is an expected part of our employment, we work our routine training and testing into hours when our presence is not demanded in the office or the field.
Monthly examinations catch any slippage in our skills or conditioning. I use the results to refine my daily training regimen. We all do--although, to be candid, one reason for listing the results here was to motivate certain individuals.
Take Avery, for instance.
You'll note that Avery's quite successful landing his curses in the Apparate and Attack trials, even under strenuous conditions and despite distractions, but his defence results were nothing short of dire. He needs more time in the sparring ring.
Aurors must keep in top form. Without rigorous training we'd stand no chance of quelling the traitorous elements of this realm.
As for Macnair and Snape, the fact is that tracking dangerous predators takes time. If it were a simple task, anyone could accomplish it and do it in no time. If it were mere child's play, Alecto Carrow might set her advanced Dark Arts students to chase down criminals as a term practicum. If it required no time, no sustained experience, no investigative prowess, and no specialist training, the Ministry would not need Aurors as a special unit within MLE--they'd merely send the local constable out to find these fugitives.
We're all eager to see them brought to justice, and they will be, but it will take a significant investment of time, skill, and commitment before it's done. It may even cost some of us our lives or limbs. That's a price we are each willing to pay in order to bring peace to Our Lord's realm.
It's also an incentive to keep our skills in top form.

Date: 2010-07-14 02:24 am (UTC)Or. I guess if other people have heard, then I didn't get in. But I hope it's that we haven't heard.

Date: 2010-07-14 02:30 am (UTC)Travers is tough, though. He was in for sparring the next morning and none the worse for the experience.
